I had the great oppourtunity to interview Tim Burton (sax) of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones at Warped tour:
How has warped tour been?
It’s been great; the audience has been really good. They’ve actually, the people
who planned the tour, the main one, who is right down there fishing, Kevin
Lyman. He, uh, they, were expecting less people this year because of the
economy, and stuff like that and punk rock isn’t so big now in the main stream
so. But it’s actually the numbers stay true. There have been more people here
this year than last year.
How many years have you been on it?
We’ve done three full warped tours and then limited shows on a couple of others.
So we’ve been on five.
Are there any bands that you’d like to tour
with? Do you have any plans for after warped tour?
Yeah we’re definitely touring after this. And we’re gonna do, we’re going to
Europe in October and then November, December, we’re doing a full US tour. As
far as bands that are gonna go out with us, I can’t really say because we’re
asking around but nothings confirmed.
Are there any bands that you want to tour with
really bad?
Yeah.
You don’t want to say?
Ehh.
Do you have a favorite song to perform?
I guess right now it’s a lot of fun to perform “you’ve gotta go.” It’s on our
new album and it’s just a fun song to play, so that’s probably a good one. I
like rock songs. The older songs. Is there any place that you’d like to play
that you haven’t? Yeah, I’ve been pushing to go to South America. We’ve never
made it down there. We’ve been to Australia, Europe, Japan. And I know that
South America has got like a lot of rock territory and a lot of fans. And I get
a lot of emails and stuff from down there. I’ve heard theres bosstones tribute
bands in Brazil and stuff, but no bosstones. So I’ve been pushing for that.
We’ll see if that ever comes together. A lot of that just depends on if you can
find a promoter down there that will do a tour with you and won’t rip you off
basically.
How do you like switching back to an indie
label?
It’s worked out really well for us. Right now with the climate of music
in the mainstream it’s not too much room for punk rock. So it’s better for us to
be on a label that’s more in that world that understands how to market us and
promote us or whatever in like the underground, ya know. Which is huge, I mean
the punk rock scene is huge. It’s always here it never goes away. The warped
tour is a testament to that. This is now the longest running festival tour. But
it’s good. We exist in that world that we have, and it’s always supported us. So
it’s nice to be on an Indie label that understands that world better.
Is there a song that means most to you on this
album?
I guess probably “chasing the sun” because I wrote it.
What’s in your cd player?
Right now, this band called Too Rude. They were on warped tour earlier. And they
are on Vans, which now has a record label. They’re one, and I hate to say it,
but they’re one of the, other than the bands that like you’ve heard of , they’re
one of the few bands that I’ve never heard of. So on this tour I’ve listened to
them and I’ve been pretty impressed with.
What would you be if you weren’t in a band?
Well, I went to college. I went to film school. So I was working in the
film business when the band started to take off. So, hopefully I would have had
some success there as a film maker.
Would you have liked to have done movies, music
videos, and films?
Yes. If you’re in the film business you want to make movies and films. I mean I
was making videos for friend’s bands, and the bosstones, and I worked on TV
commercials. Stuff like that. I was young. I was right out of film school. I was
kinda coming up, ya know. So I’ll never know. But I mean that’s something you
can always come back into. I have friends in the business. I do write some stuff
sometimes.
